Print labels on a Zebra or any other thermal printer, from your browser

PrinterTag sends the label to a Zebra directly, in its own language (ZPL), with the darkness and speed you choose: no ZebraDesigner and no driver settings. TSC, SATO, Toshiba, Honeywell, Godex, Citizen, Brother or Dymo printers print through their driver, at the exact label size.

Direct printing to a Zebra with darkness and speed
Shown with a Zebra. PrinterTag works with any thermal label printer, and with office printers on A4 sheets.

What you need (and what it does not do)

  • Zebra: any model that Zebra Browser Print detects over USB or network (ZD, ZT, GK/GX and other Link-OS printers). If yours is not found, print through the driver like any other brand.
  • TSC, SATO, Toshiba, Honeywell, Godex, Citizen, Brother QL, Dymo and others: through their Windows or Mac driver, with the label size created in the driver.
  • Both thermal transfer (ribbon) and direct thermal printers. With direct printing each bar is snapped to the printer’s dots, so barcodes scan well even at 203 dpi.
  • Labels coming out upside down? One option rotates them 180°. Light print? Raise the darkness or lower the speed. Creeping label after label? Calibrate.

Step by step

  1. Install the extension
    Install the extension
From the Chrome Web Store (it also installs in Microsoft Edge) or Firefox Add-ons. The first time, a setup assistant asks which printer you have, the label size and how to print, and ends with a test label.
  2. Zebra: install Zebra Browser Print (free)
Zebra: install Zebra Browser Print (free)
Zebra’s free program for Windows and Mac; the extension gives you the link if it cannot find it. In its settings, tick Driver Search for a USB printer, click Change and make sure your Zebra appears under Default Devices. The first time, Browser Print asks whether the extension may use your printers: Yes.
  3. Other brands: set the label size in the driver
Other brands: set the label size in the driver
Windows → Printers & scanners → your printer → Printing preferences: create a size with the exact width and height of your label, choose thermal transfer or direct thermal, gap labels, darkness and speed. For TSC, SATO, Godex, Citizen, Toshiba or Honeywell, the free Drivers by Seagull are the most complete.
  4. In PrinterTag, choose your printer
    In PrinterTag, choose your printer
Step 2, Which printer do you have?: pick the model. With a Zebra, Direct to Zebra is selected by itself; with any other brand, Print dialog. Step 3: the label size (50×25, 100×50, 4×6", 104×147 mm or Custom…).
  5. Zebra: roll type, calibrate, darkness and speed
Zebra: roll type, calibrate, darkness and speed
It should say Connected, with the resolution it detected (203, 300 or 600 dpi). Choose Labels with gap, black mark or continuous, press Calibrate the first time and whenever you change the roll, and set Thermal transfer (with ribbon) or direct thermal, Darkness (0–30) and Speed.
  6. Print the test label, then your labels
Print the test label, then your labels
The Test label template prints a frame, a centre cross and two barcodes: if the frame is complete and the scanner reads the codes, you are ready. Before each direct print, PrinterTag checks the printer and tells you if it is paused, open or out of labels or ribbon.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need ZebraDesigner?

No. PrinterTag designs the label and sends it to the Zebra in ZPL through Zebra Browser Print. ZebraDesigner Essentials is still a good free option if you only have Zebra printers and want a Windows desktop program; for RFID or database connections, ZebraDesigner Professional or BarTender.

Does it work with TSC, SATO, Brother or Dymo?

Yes, through their driver: PrinterTag prepares a page at the exact label size and the driver prints it. Size, darkness and speed are set in the driver preferences.

Does it work on a Mac?

Yes, in Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Zebra Browser Print is available for Mac too, and other printers print through their macOS driver.

Why is my label creeping down or printing blank labels in between?

The printer is not finding the gap between labels. In PrinterTag with direct printing, choose the right roll type and press Calibrate; in the driver, set “labels with gaps” and the gap size.

Can I print without any driver, over the network?

With a Zebra, Browser Print finds network printers by itself. Other brands print through their driver: a network printer installed in Windows or Mac works the same.
