A free alternative to BarTender and ZebraDesigner for everyday labels

BarTender is the right tool for industrial labelling: databases, automation, many printers. If you print price, barcode, QR or shipping labels from a list or from your store, PrinterTag does it in your browser, on any printer, free up to 50 labels a month.

Illustrated steps in the guide →

PrinterTag template editor with logo, fixed text, name, price, QR and barcode blocks, and the label preview
The template editor: drag each block anywhere on the label, like in BarTender, and see exactly what will print.

What you need

  • Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Firefox on Windows or Mac. Nothing else to install for driver or A4 printing; Zebra Browser Print (free) for direct printing to Zebra.
  • Free plan: 50 printed labels a month with every feature; previews and the test label do not count. Pro: unlimited labels.
  • Your data stays on your computer: no accounts, no servers, no analytics.
  • For a comparison of every option (BarTender, ZebraDesigner, NiceLabel, CODESOFT, Labeljoy and the free brand tools), see the full comparison of label programs.

Step by step

  1. Design the template
    Design the template
In the template editor, each block is a box you drag anywhere on the label and resize, with snapping to the edges and other blocks; or type its position in millimetres. Rulers in mm, zoom and 90°/180°/270° rotation. The preview is exactly what gets printed, at any roll or sheet size.
  2. Bring in the data
    Bring in the data
Type it, import an .xlsx or .csv list with one row per label (📄 Import Excel or CSV), or open a product or order in Shopify, PrestaShop or WooCommerce. Nothing is uploaded: everything stays in your browser.
  3. Print and repeat
    Print and repeat
Pick your design under “My templates”, the printer and the label size, and print: direct to a Zebra (darkness, speed, calibration) or through the driver of any other printer. 💾 Save job keeps it all, and the 🕘 History repeats any print with one click.

Can I open my BarTender (.btw) designs?
Import your BarTender designs (.btw) — beta: texts, barcodes, lines and images come in where they were, ready to adjust and save. Fonts are replaced by Arial; effects the browser cannot draw are left out, and the extension tells you what to check.

Frequently asked questions

Is PrinterTag a full replacement for BarTender?

No. BarTender is industrial software with database connections, automation and RFID. PrinterTag covers everyday labels (price, barcode, QR, GS1 with lot and expiry, shipping) from a list or an online store, and it is free up to 50 labels a month. If you only use a fraction of BarTender for that, it is worth a try.

Is it only for Zebra, like ZebraDesigner?

No. Zebra prints directly; TSC, SATO, Toshiba, Honeywell, Godex, Brother, Dymo and any other printer print through their driver, and office laser or inkjet printers print A4 or Letter label sheets.

Does it work on a Mac?

Yes, inside Chrome, Edge or Firefox. BarTender and ZebraDesigner are Windows programs.

What does the free plan include?

Everything: all templates, the editor, Excel import, store reading, all printers. The only limit is 50 printed labels a month. Pro costs €9.99 or $9.99 a month, or €79 or $79 a year, plus taxes.
