Print labels on A4 sheets with any laser or inkjet printer

Avery, Apli, Herma and compatible sheets, from 8 to 65 labels per sheet, or your own sheet with its exact measurements. PrinterTag places every label in its slot, lets you start at any label and corrects the alignment to the millimetre. Data typed by hand, from Excel or from your online store.

What you need (and what it does not do)

  • Any laser or inkjet printer, on Windows or Mac, and a box of A4 or Letter label sheets. Nothing to install besides the extension.
  • Avery and compatible formats from 8 to 65 labels per sheet, US Letter 5160 and 5163, or any sheet you create with its measurements.
  • Labels come out smaller or shifted? It is almost always the print dialog: scale must be Default/100%, margins None, paper A4 (or Letter).
  • For hundreds of labels a day, a thermal printer is cheaper per label and faster; PrinterTag prints on those too.

Step by step

  1. Bring in the data
    Bring in the data
Type the name, price and code, import an Excel or CSV list with one row per label (products or shipping addresses), or open a product in your online store.
  2. Choose “Office printer” and your sheet
Choose “Office printer” and your sheet
In step 2 choose Office printer; step 3 shows Sheets. Look for the reference on your box (Avery L7160, Apli 1285…): what matters are the measurements. There are A4 and US Letter sheets (Avery 5160, 5163).
  3. Your sheet is not there? Create it

+ Custom sheet: paper A4, A5, Letter, Legal or custom; columns, rows, label size and gap. Leave the margins empty and the labels are centred automatically. Save sheet keeps it under “My sheets”.
  4. First time: test on plain paper
First time: test on plain paper
Tick Print outlines and print on a plain sheet, not on the label sheet. In the print dialog: your printer, paper A4, margins None, scale Default (never “Fit to printable area”). Leave 1 copy there: copies are set in PrinterTag.
  5. Compare against the light and correct
Compare against the light and correct
Place the printed sheet over the label sheet against the light. If the outlines are off, measure the millimetres and enter them in X offset (+ right) or Y offset (+ down). It is saved for next time.
  6. Use up partly used sheets
    Use up partly used sheets
Start at label no. skips the first used labels; for single missing labels, click each slot on the sheet drawing (grey = free, green = printed). Untick “Print outlines” and print on the label sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Which label sheets can I use?

The most common Avery and compatible formats on A4 (from 8 to 65 labels per sheet), US Letter (Avery 5160, 5163) and any sheet you create: A4, A5, Letter, Legal or a custom paper size, with columns, rows, label size, gaps and margins.

Can I use a partly used sheet?

Yes. Start at label no. skips the used labels in one go, and a click on any slot of the sheet drawing skips just that one.

My labels print smaller than the sheet or shifted. Why?

Scale set to “Fit to page”, margins not set to None or a wrong paper size in the print dialog. Set scale to Default (100%), margins None and paper A4 or Letter. If the whole sheet is shifted by a few millimetres, use the X and Y offset.

Can I print address labels from Excel on Avery sheets?

Yes. Import a .xlsx or .csv with Recipient, Address, Postcode, City and Country columns and choose the Shipping address template.

Is it better than Word for labels?

Word needs mail merge and a template per sheet reference. PrinterTag knows the sheets, draws barcodes and QR codes, skips used slots and corrects the alignment in millimetres. For plain text mailing labels, Word also works.
