Other thermal printers and lasers print through their driver
In direct printing: calibrate the printer, print its test sheet and choose gap, black mark or continuous roll, thermal transfer or direct thermal
In direct printing, it checks the printer first and tells you if it is paused, open or out of labels or ribbon
Label coming out upside down? Rotate it 180° with one option, on any printer
Printer off or not answering? It tells you and what to check. If a print fails, nothing is deducted: Try again or print with the browser dialog
PrinterTag includes a visual guide with every screen drawn and numbered. Here are some of its steps.
A4 sheets: the four print dialog settings, marked one by one.Millimetre alignment: a plain-paper test against the light tells you how much to adjust.Direct to Zebra: where to pick your Zebra in Zebra Browser Print, Zebra's free program. Other thermal and office printers print through their driver.Test label: frame, rulers and barcodes to check your printer at a glance.
What it is, which stores it works with and what to install.
What software do I need to print labels?
It depends on how many labels you print and where the data comes from:
Industry and logistics (databases, automation, many printers): professional software such as BarTender or CODESOFT, sold as subscriptions.
Zebra printers: ZebraDesigner Essentials is free for simple label design.
Online stores wanting price, barcode or shipping labels straight from their Shopify, PrestaShop or WooCommerce products and orders: PrinterTag does it from the browser, with no templates to design, and is free up to 50 labels a month. It also prints lists from an Excel or CSV file.
It is a label program that works as an extension for Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox. Type the data by hand, import an Excel list or open a product or order in your online store, and the name, price, SKU, barcode or shipping address go on the label. Choose a template or design your own, check the preview and print.
No account needed: price, barcode, QR and shipping templates are ready to use, and the editor lets you place your logo and every field wherever you want.
Which stores does it work with?
Shopify: product page, product list (selected or all visible), orders and draft orders, with every variant. It reads the data with your own admin session.
PrestaShop and WooCommerce: product fields in the admin panel.
Any store that publishes product data in schema.org format, which most well-ranked stores do.
If a page has no data, you can type it in the extension or import an Excel or CSV file.
Can I use it without an online store, from Excel?
Yes. Click "Import Excel or CSV" in the extension and choose an .xlsx or .csv file with one row per label. The first row must hold the column names:
Products: Name, Price, SKU (or Reference), EAN (or Barcode) and, for several copies of a row, Quantity.
Shipping: Recipient, Address, ZIP, City, State, Country and Order.
The file is read on your computer and is never uploaded. Old Excel files (.xls) must be saved as .xlsx or .csv first.
Do I need to install anything else?
For A4 sheets or printing through the printer driver: no, just the extension.
For direct printing on Zebra: you need Zebra Browser Print, Zebra's free program for Windows and Mac (Zebra asks you to fill in a short form to download it). If it is missing, the extension gives you the link and the step-by-step guide.
Other brands (TSC, SATO, Toshiba, Honeywell, Godex): nothing to install. They print through their driver, with the browser print window.
Does it work on Microsoft Edge, Mac or Firefox?
PrinterTag works in Chrome, Microsoft Edge and Firefox, on Windows and Mac. Printing through the driver and on A4 sheets works the same on both.
Direct printing to Zebra uses Zebra Browser Print, which Zebra offers for Windows and Mac. Other brands print through their driver. Safari is not available yet.
02
Printers and labels
Printers, sizes, barcodes, templates and prices.
Which printers does it work with?
Thermal label printers of any brand (Zebra, TSC, SATO, Toshiba, Honeywell, Datamax, Godex, Brother QL, Dymo…) through their driver.
Zebra direct, in its own language (ZPL), independent of the driver, with darkness and speed control. The extension detects the printer resolution (203, 300 or 600 dpi).
Office laser or inkjet printers, with A4 label sheets.
It works with both thermal transfer (ribbon) and direct thermal printers.
Which label sizes can I use?
Rolls: 50×25, 40×30, 57×32, 62×29, 100×50, 4×6" (102×152) and 104×147 mm, or any size with the "Custom" option.
Sheets: the most common Avery and compatible formats on A4, from 8 to 65 labels per sheet, and on US Letter (Avery 5160, 5163).
Your sheet is not listed? Create it: A4, A5, Letter, Legal or any paper size, with columns, rows, label size, gaps and margins. It is saved under "My sheets". On partly used sheets you can skip used slots with a click on the sheet drawing.
My store keeps prices before tax. Can the label show the price with tax?
Yes. Tick "Add tax (VAT) to prices" and the label shows the price including tax. The rate is suggested from your browser's country (20 % in the UK, 19 % in Germany, 10 % GST in Australia…) and you can change it. It applies to every variant, list and imported file. In the US, price tags usually show the price before sales tax, so you can leave it off.
Can I change the label design or add my logo?
Yes. Besides the ready-made templates (name + price + barcode, big price + barcode, barcode only, shipping address and test label), there is a template editor to design your own with no design skills:
Choose which data goes on the label and in what order: name, price, SKU, barcode, fixed text, today's date and your logo (PNG, JPG or SVG).
For each one: height (text fits itself), alignment, bold and whether it sits on the same line as the previous one. Add a frame if you like.
Or place them freely: drag each field anywhere on the label and resize it, or type its position in millimetres.
Already have designs in BarTender? Import the .btw file (beta): texts, barcodes, lines and images come in where they were, ready to adjust and save.
The preview is exactly what gets printed, at any roll or sheet size.
Templates are saved under "My templates" and work the same through the driver and direct to Zebra. Step-by-step drawings are in the guide. For very complex industrial designs (RFID, databases), software such as BarTender is still a better fit.
Can I print a PDF as a label?
Yes. In the template editor, click “Open a PDF as a label”: the page becomes a template at its exact size and prints as is, with nothing to type. Useful for labels designed in another program or sent by a customer or supplier.
In the size step you can also choose A4 or your own label size. If the PDF has several pages, the extension tells you. Step by step in the guide.
Does it keep a history of what I print?
Yes. Every print is logged in your browser with the date, number of labels, template, size and how it was printed (driver or direct to Zebra). From "History" you can repeat it with one click, save it as a job, search by product and see how many labels you printed this month. Export it to Excel or clear it anytime; it never leaves your computer.
Does it print QR codes and GS1-128 with expiry date and lot?
Yes, for food, cosmetics, pharma or any product that needs traceability:
QR code with the product link, a data sheet or any text. Any phone camera reads it.
GS1 Digital Link: the QR code GS1 is introducing to replace the retail barcode, with GTIN, lot and expiry inside.
GS1-128 with (01) GTIN, (17) expiry and (10) lot, plus human-readable text, as distributors and retailers require.
Lot and expiry are typed in the extension or come from Excel columns. If the label is too narrow for the GS1-128 to scan well, the extension warns you. Illustrated steps in the guide.
Can I save a job and print it again another day?
Yes. "Save job" keeps everything you prepared: the data or imported list, the template, the label size or sheet (custom sheets too), skipped slots, copies and tax. Open it again from "My jobs".
Each job can be exported to a file to keep wherever you like or open on another computer, and the label list can be exported to Excel (CSV), edited and imported again.
Which barcodes does it support?
EAN-13 and UPC-A for retail products, and Code 128 for SKUs, internal references or order numbers. If an EAN check digit is wrong, the extension warns you before printing.
With direct printing, each bar is snapped to the printer's exact dots so scanners read it well even at 203 dpi.
Can I print many labels at once?
Variants: every size or colour of a product at once.
Shopify product list: select the ones you want (or none, for all visible) and get one label each.
Orders: one label per unit sold; 3 units of a product give 3 labels.
Copies: the copy count multiplies every label.
Can I print shipping labels?
Yes. From a Shopify order or the order list, the "Shipping address" template prints the customer's address, your sender details (saved for next time) and the order number with its barcode. One label per order; orders without an address (local pickup) are skipped. You can also type an address by hand.
What is the difference between printing through the driver and direct?
Through the driver, PrinterTag prepares a page at the exact label size and the printer prints it with its Windows or Mac settings. It works with any brand, but size, darkness and speed are set in the driver.
Direct, PrinterTag sends the label in the printer's own language with the size, darkness and speed you choose, regardless of the driver settings. Sharper and fewer problems.
03
Troubleshooting
Quick fixes. Illustrated in the step-by-step guide.
My label prints too light. What can I do?
Raise the darkness or lower the speed: in PrinterTag with direct printing, or in the driver preferences otherwise. With a ribbon, the print method must be thermal transfer. Illustrated troubleshooting.
The label prints on a full page, too small or misaligned
It is almost always a missing label size in the driver, or Margins not set to "None" and headers not removed in the print dialog. Direct printing avoids it. Illustrated troubleshooting.
Can I use partly used A4 sheets?
Yes: "Start at label no." skips used labels, and the X/Y adjustment corrects in millimetres if the printer prints off-centre. A4 sheet steps.
The scanner does not read the barcode
Use direct printing, which snaps bars to the printer resolution, and raise the darkness slightly. For long codes, choose a larger label. Illustrated troubleshooting.
04
Pricing and privacy
What it costs, what happens to your data and who makes it.
How much does it cost?
It is free up to 50 labels a month, with every feature and no card. Pro, with unlimited labels, costs €9.99 a month or €79 a year in the euro area, and $9.99 or $79 elsewhere (in some countries the payment page shows it in your currency), plus your country’s taxes, shown before you pay. Only printed labels count (previews and the test label don’t), and the extension warns you when you have 10 left.
You can cancel any time, and if you ask within 14 days of the first payment we refund it in full. Details in the terms of sale.
Extra seats cost less: the first seat is €9.99 a month, seats 2 to 5 are €7.99 each and from the 6th €5.99 (yearly: €79, €59 and €45; the same figures in dollars). The payment page applies the discount by itself.
I am changing computer or want to use another browser. What about my Pro key?
A Pro key works in one browser at a time. On the new computer or browser, open PrinterTag → “I have a Pro key”, paste the key (it is in the purchase email) and click Activate: Pro moves there and the previous browser loses it by itself within a few hours. You do not need the old computer.
If you still have the old browser, click “Remove from this browser” there first to free the seat. Every change of browser counts: up to 3 every 30 days; if you need more, write to hello@printertag.com. Templates, jobs and history stay in each browser: export your jobs from “My jobs” and open them in the new one. Step by step in the guide.
If your key has several seats, it works in that many browsers at once. Activating it in one more browser moves the seat that has gone longest without use, so changing computer works the same way.
We have several computers. Do we need several subscriptions?
No. Pro is priced per seat, and a seat is one browser at a time. On the payment page, set the number of seats you need (for example 4 for 4 computers): you get one key that works in that many browsers at the same time, and one invoice. On each computer, open PrinterTag → “I have a Pro key” and paste it.
You can add or remove seats later from the link in your Stripe receipt; the key adjusts by itself. Activating the key in one browser more than you have seats moves it from the browser that has not used it for longest.
Seats get cheaper as you add them: the first seat is €9.99 a month, seats 2 to 5 are €7.99 each and from the 6th €5.99 (yearly: €79, €59 and €45; the same in dollars). See the table under Pricing.
Are you an installer or reseller? Can you offer PrinterTag to your customers?
Yes. Technical services and resellers that install label printers can offer PrinterTag Pro to their customers with their own keys and volume pricing. Write to hello@printertag.com with the number of seats you have in mind and we will send you the terms.
What happens to my data and my customers' data?
Your labels and your store’s data never leave your computer. PrinterTag reads the page only when you click its icon, draws the label locally and sends it to your printer. No accounts, analytics or ads.
Only with Pro does the extension check your key with printertag.com every few hours, sending just the key and a random browser ID, nothing about your labels or your store.
The first time, it shows a privacy notice before reading anything. Your customers' addresses remain your store's responsibility; PrinterTag only helps you print them. More in the privacy policy.
Which language is the extension in?
In 9 languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Polish and Japanese. It follows your browser language and you can change it at the top of the extension. The visual guide is translated too.
Who makes PrinterTag?
